About Digital Infant 2020 >>
Digital Infant was created in April 2020 as a translation of the act of typing via a typewriter into the contemporary digital landscape of communication and production. The introduction of computers and digital technology led to a rise in mass communication and sped up the transaction of internet conversations through the establishment of instant messaging and chatrooms, now dominated by social media. These platforms allow for endless and instant communication between people across the world. This typeface celebrates the computer interface aesthetic at its infancy and the nostalgia it harbours. Honouring the digital age.
Digital Infant was created as a lower case, non-symmetrical typeface. Not obeying the normality, defiant as an infant would be. 'Infant', is a nod to the early computer age as well as taking inspiration from the attributes of a child. As children we learn to write in lower case first, the unsure lines and uncoordinated gestures are noted and mimicked in the lack of symmetry within the typeface set.
Digital Infant is the beginning of the series of digital typefaces. Currently in development and coming soon are Digital Teen and Digital Adult.
Digital Teen is purely image based, acknowledging the rise of 'image speak’ within the current generation of teens, where emoji’s are becoming part of their primary interpretation and expression of language. Digital Adult is a wholly upper case typeface which is accompanied by a more complex set of glyphs.

In the 80’s full colour games began to emerge as the power of the computer increased, allowing for new and exciting applications. 8-bit aesthetics have a very strong aesthetic nostalgia attached to them, sparking memories of similar games or technology we used to integrate with.
Space invaders is one of the most famous arcade games that has forever been referenced across multiple platforms; e.g. film, TV, fashion, design, music etc. Globally known and recognised.
Based on its simplistic layout, format and function/actions within the game I thought it a great way to activate my typeface within an active setting so that the audience had a reference to inspiration and context as well as seeing the typeface and all its elements in active use.
